In your friend list, the people who are there are your friends.

In your friends' friend list, the people who are there are their friends. But some of them are marked as mutual friends, which means that guy/girl is in your friend list too. (As well as your friend's list)

The friendship is "mutual".

  A mutual friend is a friend of you and of another person. If a lot of your friends are friends with someone you are not, Facebook will recommend them to you by claiming that you two have similar interests in friends. It's very complicated and stupid.

Well I don't have a Facebook but, I think friends are people who you have sent a friend request to and, they accept. Vice versa

Mutual friends are people you may know or, people who you and, your friends both have as a friend.
