Why Is Your iPhone 12 Not Charging?

Apple stopped providing chargers in the box of the iPhone 12 and later devices. So, most people use their older 5W adapter or third-party Android chargers to charge. I was doing the same when I ordered iPhone 12 Pro.

The power output of Android chargers is not appropriate for iPhone 12 power rating. That’s why many iPhone 12 users are facing charging problems.

Also, if your charging cable is frayed or broken, your iPhone will not charge. You should try a different charging cable and adapter and see if it starts working.

If your iPhone 12 isn’t charging when plugged in, here is a few easy steps that can fix the problem-

1. Restart Your iPhone

Although iOS is an optimized mobile operating system that gives a bug-free experience, many iPhone users started facing battery backup and charging problems on iOS 16.

iOS 16 release brings a lot of minor software bugs to iPhone 12 and earlier iPhones. A force restart will fix all the minor software glitches, and your phone will start charging.

To force restart your iPhone 12, follow these steps-

  1. Press and quickly release the volume up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume down button.
  3. Press and hold the side button for approx 30 seconds.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the side button.

Now, your iPhone has been force rebooted, and you can connect the charger to see whether the battery charging problem has been resolved.

2. Use an Original Apple Adapter

IPhone 12 not charging after water

Apple announced a no-charger policy on the release of the iPhone 12. They are just supplying a USB type C to lightning cable in the box.

So, many customers started using a third-party adapter to charge their iPhones. Not all power adapters are designed according to iPhone input current rating.

If you’re using an Android fast charger or any third-party adapter to charge your iPhone, stop using it. This could be a reason why your iPhone is not charging.

Apple always recommends using Apple’s original 20W adapter to charge your iPhones. If you already ordered from an online e-commerce website, ensure it’s original.

Many fake Apple 20W adapters are listed on eBay and other online platforms. You can try a different charger to check whether your iPhone is charging. If it’s charging with another Apple adapter, it means your one is fake or faulty.

Always buy an Apple 20W adapter from a trusted seller or Amazon or directly order from Apple’s official website or local Apple store.

3. Inspect Your Lightning Cable

The charging cable is a vulnerable part that gets damaged if not handled and stored properly. Apple’s lightning cable design is not sturdy and often gets damaged if removed forcefully.

If your iPhone 12 doesn’t charges when plugged in, inspect your lightning cable carefully and replace it if any damage is visible.

You can buy Apple’s original lightning cable from the official website or any nearest Apple store.

4. Try a New Power Source

Try charging your iPhone from a different power source and check if it’s charging or not. You can try charging with a power bank, your MacBook thunderbolt port, and a computer USB hub.

The maximum current input rating for iPhone 12 is 2.0Amp and up to 9V. So, if you have a power source of the same rating, you can try charging your iPhone from there.

5. Clean The Lightning Port

A dirty lightning port often creates battery charging problems with iPhones. If your charging port is dirty or clogged with debris, it will create connectivity issues with the power controller circuit.

Inspecting your iPhone’s charging port regularly and removing any debris stuck into it is recommended. You can use a toothpick to gently remove the debris, clean the port with a toothbrush, and wipe wax buildup with isopropyl alcohol.

If you have never cleaned your iPhone charging port, then you may damage your charging port. I have published a detailed guide on charging port cleaning and safety majors. Please read it before proceeding to clean your charging port.

6. Update Your iOS

iOS 16.0 is full of bugs that create problems with battery life and charging. If your iPhone 12 is still running on iOS 16.0, then please update your iOS immediately.

Apple has patched many bugs in iOS 16.1.1, and it is also available to install on iPhone 12 series. Go to your iPhone Settings > General > Software Update > and download and install the latest iOS update.

Restart your iPhone once iOS has been updated, and now connect the charger or place your iPhone on a wireless charger to check if the problem is resolved.

7. Factory Reset Your iPhone

Third-party apps conflict and other minor software glitches may affect your charging speed. If your iPhone 12 is charging slowly or not charging at all, a factory reset will fix the problem.

My iPhone 12 Pro started charging when I performed the factory reset. Here is how you can reset your iPhone-

  1. Go to your iPhone Settings.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  4. Select Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. Now enter your lock-screen password to confirm the process.

The factory resetting process will take approx 2 to 3 minutes to finish. Wait until your iPhone is reset completely.

Now, place your iPhone on a wireless charger or insert the lightning cable to check if it starts working.

8. Contact Apple Care

If you’ve tried all the above methods, but your phone is still not charging, the Apple technical support team is your last hope. Visit Apple’s support page and contact Apple Care.

The technical support team will diagnose your iPhone remotely and book an appointment at the nearest Apple Care center.

Visit the service center on your scheduled date, and a professional technician will inspect your iPhone hardware. He will repair or replace it to fix the problem.

How To Fix iPhone 12 Pro Not Charging Wirelessly?

My friend recently encountered a wireless charging issue with his iPhone 12 Pro.

I asked him to remove the protective case and place it on the wireless charging pad. His problem was resolved by removing the case.

Here is what you can try to fix your iPhone 12 not charging wirelessly-

1. Use MFI-certified Accessories

Always use MFI-certified accessories with Apple devices. Your iPhone might not charge wirelessly if you have a cheap third-party charging pad.

Apple strictly recommends people use the original wireless chargers to charge their iPhones.

If you’re using any third-party wireless charger, it could be possible that it doesn’t meet the required power rating for iPhone 12. Get an original MagSafe charger for iPhones.

2. Force Restart Your iPhone

This is a simple hack that fixes all minor faults accumulated over time. If your iPhone 12 isn’t charging with a MagSafe wireless charger, press and release the volume up and down buttons quickly and then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears on the phone screen.

Once your iPhone is rebooted, attach the MagSafe charger and check it starts charging.

3. Remove The Case

Sometimes MagSafe case also creates interference in wireless charging. If your phone has any protective case installed, take off the case and place your iPhone on the wireless charger.

The wireless charging problem often occurs due to a thick plastic or armored case installed on the smartphone. My friend’s iPhone 12 Pro was also not charging wirelessly because of the armored case.

4. Place At The Center

A copper coil on the back of your iPhone generates electromagnetic flux that receives power from the wireless charging pad.

If your phone is not placed at the center of the charging pad, it may disturb the magnetic flux, and your iPhone won’t charge wirelessly.

So, always place your iPhone in the center of the wireless charger to receive the induction energy; hence the battery recharges properly.

5. Update iOS

If your iOS is outdated, you might face a wireless charging problem. So, first, update the iOS software from iPhone Settings and restart your phone to apply the updates.

6. Try a New Power Source

A faulty power adapter and wall outlet may also stop your iPhone 12 from charging wirelessly. Insert the power adapter into a different wall outlet or try a new power source, like a power bank and computer USB hub, to fix the issue.

How To Fix iPhone 12 Won’t Charge Past 80?

Everyone prefers to recharge their smartphone battery to 100%, which will put extra stress on lithium-ion batteries, ultimately reducing the battery lifespan.

Apple recommends keeping your iPhone battery recharged between 20% to 80% for maximum lifespan.

1. Disable Optimised Battery Charging

If you overcharge your lithium-ion battery, it will lose its power-holding capacity because of overheating.

To extend the battery lifespan, Apple introduced Optimised Battery Charging feature on iPhones and MacBooks.

This feature reads your charging patterns and pushes the charging once the battery percentage reaches 80%. That’s why your iPhone 12 is charging on hold at 80.

You can easily bypass this by disabling Optimised Battery charging from your iPhone settings. Go to Settings > scroll and tap on Battery > tap on Battery Health > disable Optimised Battery Charging.

2. Cool Down Your iPhone

Higher temperature is bad for lithium-ion batteries, and Apple protects battery health by determining the iPhone’s temperature.

If you are playing games for a prolonged, your iPhone might be overheating. The Apple Bionic chip will stop the charging activity for an extended battery lifespan, and your iPhone will not charge fully.

Leave your iPhone for a few minutes to cool down. Once it reaches the normal temperature, insert the charger, and it will start charging again.

How To Fix iPhone 12 Charging Slowly?

If you use a 5W adapter, your iPhone 12 will charge slowly. To increase the charging speed, try Apple’s 20W power adapter.

It takes approx 30 minutes to charge your iPhone 12 from 0 to 80 percent. After 80%, Apple will automatically slow down the charging speed to extend the battery lifespan.

How To Fix iPhone 12 Not Charging After Water/Moisture Detected in Charging Port?

IPhone 12 not charging after water

Have you accidentally dropped your iPhone 12 in your bucket or swimming pool? Don’t worry; iPhone 12 is IP68 rated, which means it can withstand up to 6-meter depth for 30 minutes.

But you may get a warning when you connect the lightning cable. If you get a moisture/liquid detection alert in the lightning port, try the following methods to charge your iPhone-

1. Dry Out Charging Port

The step is to dry out the lighting connector so that the iPhone liquid detection alert goes away and it starts charging. For drying out, hold your iPhone in the standing position so that the charging port faces down.

Now, give a few gentle taps on the top of your iPhone so that any moisture or liquid comes out from the lighting port. Do not use an air blower, as the liquid may go inside and damage the motherboard.

Now wipe out all the moisture of the lightning port with the help of a Q-tip. After wiping all the visible moisture, play a heavy game so that your iPhone heats up and vaporizes the moisture.

Once it’s dried completely, connect the lighting cable, and your iPhone will start charging.

2. Use Wireless Charger

If you insert the charger into iPhone charging port and it still says, “charging is not available because liquid has been detected in the lightning connector,” you can skip the wired charging until moisture completely vaporizes.

Use a wireless charger to charge your iPhone. After a few hours, liquid vaporizes from the port, and you’ll be able to charge it again.

3. Emergency Override

If you have to take some important call and your iPhone gives a moisture detection alert, you can override it. Insert a lightning cable in the charging port and tap on Emergency Override when a liquid detection alert pop-up.

How To Fix iPhone Stops Charging After a Few Seconds?

If your iPhone starts to charge and then stops after a few seconds, it means there are issues with the output current.

When you insert the lightning cable, a small amount of power goes to your iPhone, and the processor shows the charging icon.

But, this power input is not sufficient to charge your iPhone battery. So, first, inspect the charging cable and see if it’s frayed, torn, or broken. If the cable is faulty, replace it immediately.

If you’re charging your iPhone from a computer USB hub, it may also create this problem because the current output is low on the laptop and computer’s USB hub.

So, try a new adapter that supplies rated output power to your iPhone and battery recharges. You can try your family members’ charger to verify that your charger and cable isn’t faulty.

Also, inspect the charging port on the bottom and remove any debris from the charging port. If that doesn’t help, take your iPhone to the nearest Apple care to fix the issue.

Conclusion

I hope you found this guide helpful. If you follow the above solutions correctly, your iPhone’s charging issue will be resolved. If any solution works for you, share it in the comment box. Do share it with your friends, and let me know if you have any questions related to iPhone’s battery.
