If you're familiar with Calendar on a Mac (iCal in OS X 10.7, and earlier), creating events in the iPhone’s version of Calendar will be a breeze. Even if you use Outlook or another calendar program, Calendar is pretty straightforward. Here's how to add an appointment or event: Tap Calendar on the Home
screen. From day, month, or year view, tap the plus sign button in the upper right corner to open the Add Event screen. In Day view, press and hold the time at which you want to add an event until an Add Event screen appears. Tap the first field, where you see Title. The keyboard appears. If you like working with a slightly bigger keyboard, turn your iPhone to the horizontal position — or use an external keyboard connected via Bluetooth. Type in the name of the event or appointment in the Title field. Tap Return, and then type in a Location or something else pertinent to the appointment. This field is optional. Tap the field with Starts, Ends, and Time Zone. The time and date rotor opens. Using the rotor, set the date and time the appointment begins. Your iPhone keeps track of your movements and places you frequently visit, as long as Frequent Locations is turned on in Settings→Privacy→Location Services→System Services→Frequent Locations. iPhone uses your location history to calculate travel time to your appointments and then adds that information to the Today view of the Notification Center. The ending time is automatically set for one hour later. To change it, tap the Ends field. Set the date and time the appointment ends. Tap the Ends field again to close the rotor. If it's an all-day event such as a meeting or anniversary, tap the All-Day switch to On. The rotors change and show only the month, day, and year. If the event is more than one day, say a conference or vacation, choose the beginning and ending dates. The advantage to using the all-day feature instead of setting the beginning time to 8 a.m. and the ending time to 8 p.m. is that in Day view, the event shows up at the beginning of the day rather than as a highlighted event over the course of the whole day. This way, you can add specific appointments during the course of the all-day event. In List view, All-Day appears next to the event title. Tap the Time Zone field if you want to set the event in a time zone other than your own. A field opens where you type in the name of a large city that resides in the time zone you want to use. Tap the city from the list when a match appears. You return to the Add Event screen. Tap the Calendar field. The Calendar screen opens. Tap the calendar you want to put this event on if it's different than what is shown in the field. You choose the default calendar under Settings. Tap Done. You can stop here or you can add some more details to your event with the remaining fields: Repeat, Alert, and Notes. If you use an over-the-air calendar like iCloud or Microsoft Exchange, you also have the options of indicating if you're busy or free during the event and of inviting people to your event. If you receive text or e-mail messages with time and date references — even things like “Meet me at 6” or “Dinner next Thursday,” the reference is highlighted and underlined and tapping it opens a pop-up menu that lets you create an event or show the time or date in Calendar.
