Can t click links in Chrome

I'm running in Windows 10 Pro. Chrome is my default browser.

When I click on the Chrome icon in my taskbar to open it, and then click on any external URL link, for example a link in a Microsoft Teams message, nothing happens. Chrome doesn't open the link.

If I close the browser and then click on the link, it opens a new instance of Chrome and the link comes up, and clicking other links work.

But if I close Chrome and click on the Chrome icon in my taskbar again, it gets back into the bad state where external URL links do not work.

Can t click links in Chrome

The problem was as follows. In the shortcut to Chrome in the Taskbar, I had gone to Properties > Advanced, and checked the "Run As Administrator" box. That was causing the issue. When I unchecked the box, I had no other issues opening external links in Chrome.

Ok so, i'm trying to login with my Cable Company's username/password so I can watch full episodes of shows on the ID Channel. Well, I can't click on any links at the top (the one's that are in red). Doing so in Edge, works just fine. . Anyone know what the problem could be, or would it be easier just to uninstall Chrome and reinstall?

Running latest edition of Chrome w/updates ?

May try to reset Chrome before uninstall/reinstall. Also, check the comptability settings. (not sure of procedure, don't have Chrome)

I figured out the problem. It was due to an Ad Blocker

Have a user who cannot open links when they are clicked on in Google Chrome. When the Default browser is set to Edge-they open fine.

Have noticed that the link will open when Chrome has not been opened yet. Though if Chrome is opened first and then the link is clicked-it will not open. Strange!

Does anyone have a solution to this please?

  • Try to update Google Chrome.

    Try to reset browser settings.

Try to create new user in browser.

    Re-install browser.

Hi Peter-unfortunately I have tried all of the above and it has not resolved the issue-very annoying!:(

  • Use incognito mode. If this helps then temporarily disable your extensions to identify which one is causing the rendering problem. To do this go to chrome://extensions and uncheck Enabled for each extension one by one.

  • Also try to use Chrome in safe mode

  • The reason here is likely that the filetype association in the registry is trying to launch chrome.exe directly instead of using the proper system call. Most browsers won't allow two instances of themselves to run, hence why it works when Chrome is not running.

Hi Ian, so how do I rectify this so that it opens fine in future? Either if Chrome is already open before the hyperlink is clicked or after?

    Thanks!

Most likely problems with opening hyperlinks are connected with either the security restrictions of your Internet browser that doesn't allow opening pop-up windows, or with your Flash player plug-in that prevents you from opening URLs in local Flash files.

Why is Google Chrome not responding when I click on it?

A program or process currently running on your computer might be causing problems with Chrome. You can restart your computer to see if that fixes the problem. If the above solutions didn't work, we suggest you uninstall and reinstall Chrome.
If you make Chrome your default browser, any links you click will open automatically in Chrome..
On your computer, click the Start menu ..
Click Control Panel..
Click Programs Default Programs. Set your default programs..
On the left, select Google Chrome..
Click Set this program as default..
Click OK..
