How do you politely remove someone from a WhatsApp group?

I'm running a small (< 20) group of people. We organize day-long events every weekend, where new members are also welcome. Anyone can join our Facebook group where we advertise our events.

At our latest event, a person showed up who seemed to be cool in the beginning, but ended up making the rest of the day miserable to some (most) of the regulars.

Without going into too much detail, this was due to one of his personality traits which I'm pretty sure he won't be able to change any time soon. I'd like to point out that the person is friendly and 'cool', but pretty much unbearable after an hour or two. He didn't do anything outrageous or inappropriate, but he was extremely annoying after a while.

After the event, I sent him an email, politely suggesting that he might not fit in well with us because of this particular behavior. Unfortunately, the message wasn't clear enough. His response was something along the lines of "Haha, yeah I can [be like that] sometimes. Anyways, I enjoyed the [event], I'll be happy to join you next time!".

How do I tell this person that I would like him to leave our group, without embarrassing him? (Or at least minimizing the embarrassment.)

WhatsApp is making changes to give people more privacy and control, with a slew of new features to be rolled out to users soon.

Users of the Meta-owned messaging app will be able to leave group chats silently, choose who can see them when they’re online, and prevent screenshots from being taken of "view once" messages.

These changes are aimed at safeguarding user privacy, said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

"New privacy features coming to WhatsApp: exit group chats without notifying everyone, control who can see when you're online, and prevent screenshots on view once messages," he said.

"We'll keep building new ways to protect your messages and keep them as private and secure as face-to-face conversations".

Leave WhatsApp group chats silently

If you’re in way too many group chats but feel embarrassed to leave, there’s good news; soon you’ll be able to avoid social awkwardness by exiting the chat without notifying everyone.

At the moment, WhatsApp alerts members of a group chat when someone leaves or is removed. But with the new change, which will start to be rolled out to all users this month, only group admins will be notified if someone leaves.

WhatsApp will also introduce the ability for users to select who can and cannot see when they’re online. This new feature will start rolling out to all users this month.

Another new feature will be the ability to block screenshots for the platform’s "view once" messages.

Users can already send ephemeral photos and videos, which disappear from the chat after they’ve been opened. WhatsApp said it would soon be enabling screenshot blocking for these messages.

"We’re testing this feature now and are excited to roll it out to users soon," the platform said in a blog post.

More time to delete WhatsApp messages

In addition, WhatsApp also announced that users will now have much more time in which to delete messages they regret sending.

"Rethinking your message? Now you’ll have a little over two days to delete your messages from your chats after you hit send," WhatsApp announced on social media.

This is much longer than the one hour or so that people have previously had to change their minds.

WhatsApp group chats are incredibly useful if you need to chat with groups of friends, family members, colleagues, communities, and so on. But from time to time, you might need to remove someone from a group chat for whatever reason.

Maybe that person is no longer part of the community, or they are no longer with the company, or maybe they’re just being disruptive and you need to remove them from the group chat. Thankfully, it’s pretty easy and as long as you have group admin status, removing someone from a WhatsApp group chat can be done in a matter of seconds.

Removing someone from a WhatsApp group chat

  1. Open WhatsApp on your phone
  2. Tap the group chat you want to remove the user from
  3. Tap the top of the group chat’s name
  4. You will now see a list of users who are part of the current group chat
  5. Tap on the user you want to remove from the group chat
  6. Tap on Remove from Group

Keep in mind that the person you removed will still have access to the chat history prior to their removal, which means that if sensitive information needs to be shared, it should only be done after the person’s removal, otherwise they will be able to see it and keep it as part of their chat history.

Also, the user will know who has removed them as a small message will be shown in the chat that they have been removed from the group and by whom, but otherwise the removal process is pretty quick and simple and can be done in seconds.
