A lot of folks on my IG feed kept posting stories of them watching reruns of ‘Hyori's Bed & Breakfast’. After a point, curiosity got the better of me and I decided to add it to 'My List' on Netflix. It took a while before I actually got down to watching the first season, but man, when I did, I had to stop myself from falling head over heels for it.

A bit about the story:

The show revolves around K-Pop sensation Lee Hyori and her house on Jeju Island where she lives with her husband Lee Sang-Soon and their pets. The couple decide to open their home for a 'bed and breakfast' experience to selected guests.

Introverts by nature and unaccustomed to company, Hyori and Sang-Soon are initially quite apprehensive about the idea. But as the days go on, we watch them turn into beautiful caretakers to every single guest they host. 

Their pets are whole different level of cute. There's Mi-Mi the cat who's stoically disdainful of human beings, there's Sam-Sik who's so fat that she gets mistaken as a pillow most times, and then there are 5 dogs, among which Mocha is my personal favorite.

As the B&B opens, we watch people from all walks of life come in and make a home here. From college friends, to old couples, to high-school siblings and even scientists and explorers, the guests have a wonderful charm of their own.

If you've watched this show already, you know how IMPOSSIBLE it is not fall in love with IU a.k.a. Ji-Eun. 🐼💕

Even though I don't listen to K-pop music, knowing IU for the first time onscreen through the show felt like finding a kindred spirit. She's warm, kind, cool, extremely talented and humble. I love how she took over Sang-Soon's coffee duty at the B&B.

I've learned a gazillion things from this show but here's listing down my 4 favorites:

1. As we watch Hyori make peace with her super successful past as a K-Pop superstar, we also watch her in love with her present. Choosing to lead a life that feels right to her is what brings her immense peace and satisfaction, even if it isn't a life everybody (her fans, more specifically) would have her choose. Living in her own authentic way, I took pride in the way Hyori stayed true to herself.

2. Sometimes, discomfort is a pathway to new adventures. This is beautifully proven when we see Sang-Soon and Hyori open themselves up to other people, other ways of thinking and being, through the show. Initially awkward, we see them grow more confident and then even excited, to welcome new folks home.

3. When you watch Hyori and Sang Soon with each other, it just reaffirms the fact that the right kind of love will always find you if you allow yourself to be found. I felt my heart soar as I watched the ease, comfort, honesty, care and affection the two showered on each other without the need for words or loud actions.

4. Last but not the least, this show's taught me that we should laugh, as much as possible and be kind, as often as we can. Be it absolutely terrible jokes between Hyori and Sang-Soon or the camaraderie between IU and the guests or just our pet babies faffing around the bonfire for a piece of meat, the house was always filled with sounds of laughter and quiet, steady, care.

This TV program shows how a Korean Pop diva, Lee Hyori manages her personal house in Jeju Island into a homestay where people can stay and have their meal while enjoying their trip in Jeju. In season 1, Hyori and her husband got help from Lee Jieun (IU), a famous singer in Korea to serve the guests in charge of cleaning, cooking, and providing other services. In season 2, Im Yoona, a member of the legendary group Girls’ Generation, and Park Bogum, a talented actor replaced Jieun in doing the tasks. Even though they are celebrities, they serve the guests just like how ordinary homestay hosts do. They try their best to provide good hospitality and make great memories with the guests. In this show, you can also see how the guests spend their time in Jeju differently. Some of them enjoy their ‘me time’, and the others come with their beloved ones enjoying interesting activities that can be done in Jeju. At the night, when all guests come back to the homestay, you can see the natural interaction between the guests and the hosts showed by how they spend their time together talking about their life, having barbeques, and even playing games. 2.     Little Forest

Lee Seung-gi (singer and actor), Jung So-min (actress), Park Na-rae (comedienne), and Lee Seo-jin (actor) are challenged to take care of children who are growing up in the city with a modern and cramped environment to stay 2 days and 1 night in the countryside away from their parents. It is to provide children to experience nature life where they can play anything with their body and creativity without exposure to internet. You can learn many things about children's development and nature as the casts are professionally trained in taking care of children. Despite their busy schedules, Lee Seung-gi and Jung So-min are certified child psychology counselors, while Lee Seo-jin and Park Na-rae were trained in the cooking course for young kids. They also have to build fun activities for the children such as a treehouse and suspension bridge with their own woodworking skills. You will realize how simple it is to clear your mind just by watching cute children spending their time in nature accompanied by celebrities who are skilled yet entertaining.

3.     Begin Again

If you love music, this show may be your source of happiness. Begin Again is a TV program where talented and respected South Korean musicians doing busking in several beautiful cities all over the world. Some of them are Dublin, Manchester, Montreux, Lisbon, Budapest, Berlin, and the last one is Seoul, South Korea. The casts usually performed in public places such as park, café, and traditional markets where people are enjoying time leisurely. They mostly performed Korean songs and also did several Western cover-song. Although most of the songs are in Korean, the casts successfully made audiences immersed in the songs. This show proves that people do not need to understand the language to enjoy music because music itself is the language. Be ready, this show might make you miss the life before Covid 19, because who does busk in the middle of the pandemic?  Consists of four seasons with many musicians, here are some of my favorite performances.

I watched terrace house tokyo 2019-2020!!!! And i only liked the short haired artist girl!! I think her name is kaori? She's cute and i have a crush on her!!!!!!!!!! And then the first few eps of opening new doors but then it never really got my interest and i'm so frustrated bc i wanted to like it soooooooooo bad! -_- i mean i rally enjoy seeing the house and i like the concept of slow living but it gets boring sometimes! Di 2021 yang masih diramaikan oleh penampilan virus corona, walaupun sudah mulai banyak vaksin bermunculan dan di indonesia yang udah mulai fase vaksiniasi. Entah masih banyak perdebatan mulai dari vaksin apa yang paling ampuh sampe ada sang mantan menteri yang mencoba bikin vaksin sendiri. Di bulan Ramadhan yang baru selesai ini pun sempat rame tentang pemerintah yang labil dalam menangani warga yang mau mudik. Awalnya dilarang seluruhnya, terus berubah jadi diperbolehkan bagi wilayah tertentu, terus berubah lagi jadi dilarang total. Bikin mereka yang mau mudik harus ucing ucingan ngehindarin razia polisi di jalan.

Anyway, setelah bulan maret kmrn gw nyoba buat ngurangin maen twitter dengan ngehapus akun dan mencoba pake instagram cuman buat share foto2 analog aja. Akhir bulan april kemarin gw mutusin buat coba nyisihin waktu buat baca buku. Call me crazy, tp kyknya algoritma lagi ngarahin gw buat baca buku. Beberapa bulan lalu gw ntn Hyori’s Bed & Breakfast di Netflix. Sayangnya waktu itu H's B&b season 1 tinggal episode 8 sampe 14. Walaupun ga semua episode tp gw seneng ngikutin serial ini. Di season 1 guest starnya itu IU, Lee Ji-eun 😍 💜 selain karna gw seneng liat dia yg manis dan imut #ahay di serial ini dia jadi staff di homestay punya Hyori dan suaminya. Nah di waktu break kerja dia suka baca buku sambil nyantai di halaman. She look so cute yet so comfy and cozy.

Selain karna IU, beberapa bulan kmrn pun video Pewdiepie muncul di timeline Youtube gw. Video pertama dia yang muncul tuh judulnya Book Review. Di video ini dia review bukunya Epictetus yang judulnya “Discourses and selected writings”. Buku filsafat.. bahasa inggris pula.. yang buat gw yang baru mau mulai baca buku malah jadi minder wkwkw. Tapi di video kedua dia yang bikin gw tertarik baca buku. Judulnya “I Read 721 book in 2018″, intinya sih di video ini dia sharing buku apa aja yang dia baca dan kenapa dia mulai baca. Dia bilang klo dia punya masalah tentang menyelesaikan sesuatu yang udah dia mulai dan dengan baca buku sampai selesai bantu dia dengan masalahnya. Ada rasa kepuasan pas nyelesein baca 1 buku walaupun terkadang dia baca buku yang dia ga suka tapi dia maksa dirinya sendiri buat selesi buku itu. Fakta klo minat membaca buku generasi muda sekarang yang makin rendah, jadi hal yang bikin gw sadar dan miris dengernya. Karna dari yg gw liat klo kelakuan netizen di sosial media, bagi gw netizen skrg cepet banget ngehakimi satu masalah tanpa mau “baca” atau coba mengerti secara keseluruhan masalahnya.

Jadi, setelah gw memutuskan buat mengurangi konsumsi sosial media gw, baca buku jadi satu kegiatan yang pengen gw coba dan gw jadiin kebiasaan baru. Dan semoga dengan baca buku gw bisa (i know its sound crazy but..) ngealihin pikiran gw yang ga bisa fokus dan pelan pelan nyelesein masalah yang cuman gw yg tau. Who knows, you kill 2 birds with 1 rock 🤷‍♂️.

Awal banget gw mulai baca buku lagi tuh gw baca buku "Sebuah seni untuk bersikap bodo amat" karya Mark Manson. Buku ini gw beli udh lama tapi ga beres-beres gw baca karna gw males wkwkw. Setelah coba baca buku tadi, gw penasaran coba cari novel sama buku lain. "Animal Farm" nya George Orwell, "Man search for meaning" karya Victor Frankl sama "Goodbye, things" karya Fumio sasaki jadi pilihan gw saat ke gramedia. "Animal Farm" pernah gw baca tapi waktu itu buku ini dipinjemin sama temen kuliah gw waktu kita lg ke belitung buat praktek mata kuliah. Karna penasaran akhirnya gw beli buku ini. "Man search for meaning" gw tau buku ini dari rekomendasi Pewdiepie di video tadi. Sedangkan "Goodbye, things" oleh Fumio Sasaki ini gw nemu di Google Play Book. Karna disana bisa baca free sample dan ketika gw baca ternyata menarik, gw pun cari bukunya di Gramedia.

Tadinya gw ma review ala-ala "Animal Farm" di post ini. Tapi malah cerita ngalor ngidul wkwkw. Mungkin di post selanjutnya deh. Semoga, semangat buat baca bukunya ga cuman bertahan 1-2 bulan tapi bisa jadi kebiasan baru. 2021 new habit, (Hopefully) 2021 books i’ll read from now. Cheers 🍻

When you had woken up this morning, your body ached, but you just assumed that it was the result of yesterday’s strenuous yoga session. But when you waddled into the kitchen, you noticed something was a little off.

The sound of quick footsteps filled the first floor. “Who’s sick?” Sang-soon called out before entering with the medical tool.

Hyori gently brushed your hair out of your face, before running the thermometer across your forehead. A frown fell on her lips.

“38.2,” Hyori informed you, brushing your hair out of your face. “You’ve got a fever.”

You let out a groan, taking a seat beside the others at the dining table. One of the fellow guests gently rubbed your back, placing a piece of toast onto your plate.

“You should stay here and rest today,” Sang-soon stated, handing you a warm cup of tea. “What do you girls have planned today?”

You took a deep breath, inhaling the steam as your friends began to describe the day’s plans. You couldn’t help the pout that formed on your face. With your busy work schedules, it had been so hard to find time for the five of you to go on vacation. Now you were stuck with the stupid flu.

“If you had taken my jacket, you wouldn’t have gotten sick!” The other guests chuckled at Hyori’s sudden outburst, and you found yourself smiling as well. “But no, you insisted on freezing, and now look at you.”

“The jacket was literally on your body when you offered it to me.” You retorted. “If I took it, you would be sick.”

“Someone is sick?”

The entire table turned at the sound of the new voice. Clad in her oversized t-shirt and track pants, Ji-eun stood at the entrance of the kitchen. Greetings were quickly exchanged, and the employee repeated her initial question.

Guiltily, you raised your hand. Her gaze fell on you, a soft smile on her face. She gently patted your head before taking the seat across from you.

“Oppa and I have to go into town today,” Hyori noted, regaining everyone’s attention. “Ji-eun can take care of you.” 

The house emptied out before you knew it, leaving the two of you to play by yourselves. While you wanted to go sit on the terrace, you were shoved into bed.

“Ji-eun, I feel fine.” 

“You’re still shivering.” 

She pressed a gentle hand to your forehead, smiling at you. You returned the smile, noting the way her eyes softened. “Sleep well.” Despite how badly you wanted to ask her to stay, you merely watched her retreating figure. Your eyes slowly closed, dreams filled with a familiar singer. 

When you awoke, you found the other girl in the kitchen. Ji-eun insisted on making you an herbal tea that she had tried in Hong Kong, claiming that it made everything feel better. 

It wasn’t long until a cup of brown liquid was sitting in front of you. You took a small sip, and you couldn’t hide your reaction. 

“What’s wrong with it?” 

You shook your head. “No, no, it’s fine.” At her glare, you sheepishly looked down at the cup once more. “Is it supposed to be so bitter?” 

At your words, Ji-eun took the cup from you. She swallowed the liquid and stuck her tongue out in disgust. “I messed up.” She let out a giggle, and you couldn’t help but join her. 

When your laughter came to an end, you glanced out the window. You had slept for much longer than you had intended, and the sun was starting to set. Wordlessly, you gently placed Ji-eun’s hand in yours, tugging her out to the terrace. The two of you took a seat at the edge, neither one of you letting go. 

“Thank you for taking care of me today,” you whispered.

She turned to face you, and you felt your cheeks heat up as you locked eyes. With her free hand, she reached up to tuck your hair behind your ear. Slowly, she leaned closer to you, eyes filled with nervousness. She stopped within an inch of your face, gaze flickering to your lips. 

Without hesitation, you closed the gap. You relished in the feeling of her arms wrapping around you. Before the kiss could go any further, the sound of barking filled the Bed & Breakfast. 

The two of you pulled away right as the car came up the drive. Ji-eun ran down the steps to help with the groceries, you right behind her. 

“Are you feeling better?” Sang-soon asked, ruffling your hair. 

You smiled up at him. “Much.” With that, you fell in step with Ji-eun and you couldn’t help the grin on your face. 

The couple stayed back at the car, merely observing your laughter. Hyori waited until you entered the house, before turning to face her husband. 

“Do you think they know we saw them?”

Hyori’s Bed & Breakfast | The Good and the Bad

With the recent finale of Hospital Playlist, I felt a sense of emptiness and in search for a show that can provide me with an escape and a healing-like feeling. That’s when I stumbled upon Hyori’s Bed & Breakfast on Netflix. I’ve heard about the show but have not really look much into it. And yet when I did, I did not expect that I would get so much into it. I was left with a sense of peace and calmness, a desire to be a better, healthier person and motivation to do all the chores that I have been putting off for so long, and here’s why:

Hyori’s Bed & Breakfast is a reality TV show looking into the daily life of Lee Hyori, a well-known South Korean singer, and her husband Lee Sang-Soon as they become a B&B owners located in their own house in Jeju Island for a span of 2 weeks. The show depicts the couple’s lifestyle, their hobbies in yoga and music, their love for cats and dogs and meaningful interactions between the couple themselves, to the staff(s) as well as their guests. It is a show without a plot and the “drama” that you can get is pretty much relatable to those in the adult world / if you have a house (i.e. having your car stuck in the middle of snow storm or leakage in your plumbing system). 

The show definitely works mostly because of the casts, especially Hyori. She’s the type of person who does not really care of how people view her and blunt about her personality and who she is. She’s not ashamed to show how she lives and so what you get out of the show seems to be an authentic depiction of how Hyori is in real life. To top it off, Sang-soon is a supportive and patient spouse who understands and truly cares for his wife. Their relationship is so healthy (it really shows) because they do communicate with one another. I just love seeing their chemistry and marriage throughout the show - it’s beautiful T__T <3

If that’s not enough, the show also brings in special staff members each season (read: IU, Yoona and Park Bo-gum). The show highlights each of their personalities really well and somehow also shapes the tone of the season. With IU as the staff of the first season, the show takes a more comedic, youthful tone whereas in season 2, it seems to be more structured, mature vibe to it with Yoona and Park Bo-gum taking care of the B&B (It probably has to do with their age/maturity + the age gap of the staffs with Hyori & Sang-soon). It’s just nice to see their personalities, their hard working nature and how they actually are as “normal” people - outside of the stage that we are used to.

I thought it was also an excellent way to market Jeju Island as a tourism destination. Through the show, you can see the various nature, mountains, beaches, museums, activities that Jeju has to offer. All the different guests and their stories bring about unique episodes each time even with the repetitive nature of the mundane tasks that the B&B staffs have to do.

As a fan of the show however, I was devastated to hear when Hyori & Sang-soon had fans coming up to their house (ringing on the bells or even trespassing) after the show had ended. Recently, they apparently sold the house to JTBC, the television channel that produced the show. I genuinely felt bad for them because above all that is their house, their home (their wedding venue!) and yet (some crazy) fans are stripping them away from that comfort and privacy of that life. Like, I understand that sharing your address to people who visits the B&B comes with consequences but as fellow human beings, I still think it is common sense to not bother them with their lives. Sure, they are entertainers on TV but above all they are still humans just like us - to whom we should respect, show common courtesy and give them the space they need. I’m just afraid that even though we see the many good memories and people they’ve met, they as a couple are left with bitter memories because of this issue. I am a fan of the show and I would love it if they made another season of this, but not in the expense of the lovely couple’s lives. I would not want them to sacrifice any more just for a reality TV show. (They originally moved to Jeju for a reason and yet I don’t understand how some fans don’t get that :/ )

All in all, despite the contemplation (rant) that I had, Hyori’s Bed & Breakfast truly is a really nice show to wind down for the day, relieve your stress and take your mind off the struggles of one’s day. A show that is actually perfect during this quarantine/lock-down period. I hope that you can enjoy the show just as much as I did!

P.S.: As for me, I am now certain that I would like to have a house in the woods for my retirement. But not with that many dogs and cats ;)

#kww2020 #Love: IU. Scarlet Heart: Ryeo, My Mister, Hotel del Luna, Persona, Hyori’s Bed and Breakfast

A woman that has a special place in your heart. It can be a character whose story you really enjoyed/related to. Or an actress you always like to see on screen because they just seem to have a knack for picking the right project or embodying a character.

I love IU!! As soon as I hear that she’s in a drama, I know that I have to watch it because she does such a good job at playing such drastically different characters (Hae Soo, Lee Ji-An, Jang Man-Wol, all her Persona characters). She’s also such a kind and lovely person, something that shows in Hyori’s Bed and Breakfast, a show that I highly recommend everybody watch for its feel good vibes, especially in this time of stress and anxiety.
